The name Vougeot immediately calls up the name of that famous vineyard, the Clos de Vougeot. But this village of the Côte de Nuits has other fine vineyards. The name itself derives from the little river Vouge. The powerful abbey of Cîteaux established the vineyards there in the 12th century and laid the foundations of their long brilliant reputation. Their claim to fame is due at least partly to the fact that, rather unusually for the Côte de Nuits, Vougeot produces white wines (Chardonnay) as well as red (Pinot Noir). The appellation was formally instituted in 1936.
Located at around 240 metres altitude, to the right of the road leading to the famous Clos de Vougeot castel, the Premier Cru Les Petits Vougeots vines are cultivated on shallow, brown calcareous soils. The name "Les petits Vougeots" refers to the presence of the source of the stream "La Petite Vouge", which only forms in case of strong weather.
The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted first in the vineyard and then in the winery, and completely destemmed. They then undergo cold maceration for 4 to 5 days before fermentation. Vinification takes place under temperature control for around twenty days, with daily punching down and pumping over. The wine is then matured in oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, 50% of which are new.
