Origins

This village appellation, one of the largest in the Côte de Beaune, covers 475 hectares, 337 of which are classified as 1er Cru.

Overlooking the town of Beaune to the north, just above the Clos du Roi parcel, the 'Marconnets' climat (originating from the Germanic word Marconnans) covers just over 9 hectares, of which 6 hectares are given over to the Pinot Noir grape variety.

Today, it is generally accepted that the climat takes its name from the spring that once flowed through the area and is mentioned in several period registers. The term is derived from the Old French "marc" meaning marsh.

Vinification and maturing

Hand-picked, the grapes are sorted in the vineyard and then again in the winery on a table. The grapes are then 100% de-stemmed but not crushed, so they are placed whole in wooden vats by gravity. Maceration lasts around 3 weeks, with regular punching down of the cap. No oenological products (such as yeasts, enzymes or tannins) are added to avoid altering this precious terroir. The wine is aged for 17 months in barrels without racking (25% new barrels).
