Terroir

Château de Pierreux’s 110 hectares of vines are planted in shallow, well-drained pink granitic, schistous, and siliceous soils which contain deposits of blue porphyry from the volcanic eruptions of Mont Brouilly that date back millions of years. A selected plots cuvée from Lieu-dit PIERREUX... the expression of multiple terroirs!

This wine is only produced in small quantities and is a blend from two plots that are remarkable:

     - The plot 'C443' on the southern slope of Pierreux, is underlain by altered bluestone volcanic soils and deep schistous alterites.

     - The plot 'C427', on the eastern plateau of Pierreux, is underlain by shallow to deep siliceous volcanic rocks.

The estate was certified High Environmental Value (HVE) in 2020.

Tasting

This brilliant ruby-red cuvée with violet highlights has a spicy nose of black cherries in syrup, blueberries and peonies. An incredible subtlety emerges on the palate. The tannins are present but remain very silky, with a retro-olfaction of blueberry cream, chocolate and spices. This top-flight Brouilly has intense, persistent aromas and a minerality so characteristic of Pierreux.

Vinification and ageing

These parcels were harvested on September 17 & 20, 2022.
The Gamay grapes were entirely destemmed but not crushed, then vatted by gravity with a 25-day maceration with only one 10-minute pumping over per day. Indeed, the grapes presented real potential and the wish was not to overextract but to express finesse and racy. No rough pushing down of the caps here, but instead, the wine underwent rack-and-return six times at the end of maceration. Finally, this cuvée benefited from a 9-month aging in oak casks.
The two cuvées were blended and lightly filtered before bottling on July 7, 2023.
Production: 6,608 bottles.

Ageing potential

Its concentration and elegance mean that it can be enjoyed young, but it is a wine that will age well (3 to 6 years or more).
