Grapes for this village appellation are harvested in 16 villages located in the French departments of Côte d'Or and Saône-et-Loire. Only red wines are produced for this appellation.
The terrain is unique here. A geological fault resulted in the sinking of the Saône River floodplain which thereby became separated from the Morvan Plateau, creating a hillside with very regular slopes that benefit from eastern and south-eastern exposure. The uniformity of the slopes and their exposure allow the vines to get an optimal amount of sunshine during the crucial months when the grapes are ripening. The soil is also the result of the subsidence of the floodplain. It varies enormously, almost with every step, and consequently has a strong influence on the wines produced.
